Cranial Remolding Orthoses (CRO)| Remolding Helmets

Cranial Remolding Orthoses (CRO) | remolding helmets are specialized orthotic devices utilized to treat positional Plagiocephaly, Brachycephaly, and Scaphocephaly. These conditions arise due to external factors, such as prolonged pressure exerted on the skull, leading to an abnormal shape or flatness of the head.

How Effective is Treatment?

The treatment, known as cranial orthosis or remolding helmet, focuses on actively shaping the infant’s skull by applying targeted pressure to specific areas. The newborn’s skull comprises soft and pliable plates with spaces in between, which gradually undergo hardening and fusion as the baby grows. Cranial orthotic treatment redirects cranial growth, ultimately achieving improved head symmetry.

Extensive research has demonstrated the high effectiveness of helmet therapy in enhancing the appearance of the head and restoring a more natural shape. These helmets are meticulously crafted to fit the baby’s head snugly and are typically worn for several months, varying based on the severity of the condition.

It is crucial to emphasize that the optimal effectiveness of cranial remolding helmets is achieved when the baby’s brain and skull are actively growing, highlighting the critical importance of early intervention. Generally, the duration of helmet wear spans several months, depending on the severity of the condition, with the treatment yielding the most successful outcomes when initiated before the baby reaches six months of age.

Why Ortho Design?

Ortho Design offers customized solutions for cranial remolding helmets addressing the unique needs of each patient. Certified Orthotists at Ortho Design ensure proper helmet fit and treatment effectiveness. Cranial remolding orthoses are a safe and effective treatment option. Early intervention is key, and it is important to work with a qualified provider (the BC Government requires a Certified Orthotist) to ensure the best possible outcome. With the right treatment and support, most babies can achieve a more natural and symmetrical head shape.
