Sesamoiditis

Sesamoids are unique bones that differ from other bones in the human body in that they are not connected to any other bones. Instead, they are either embedded in muscle or connected to tendons. There are two sesamoid bones situated beneath the big toe at the base of the foot, and when these bones become inflamed and painful, the condition is known as Sesamoiditis, a form of tendonitis.

Sesamoiditis typically has a gradual onset and is often caused by repetitive and increased physical activity or poor foot mechanics. Athletes, dancers, and individuals who engage in activities that place constant pressure on the ball of the foot, such as running or jumping, are at a higher risk of developing Sesamoiditis. Moreover, certain foot structures, such as a high arch or a tight Achilles tendon, can also contribute to the development of Sesamoiditis.

The symptoms of Sesamoiditis include pain and swelling in the ball of the foot, particularly around the big toe. The pain may worsen with movement or pressure; in severe cases, the affected individual may experience difficulty walking. If left untreated, Sesamoiditis can lead to chronic pain and damage to the sesamoid bones.

The treatment of Sesamoiditis typically involves reducing the pressure on the affected area by using custom orthotics or padding to cushion and support the foot. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help to alleviate the symptoms and prevent the condition from progressing to a more severe stage. Contact Ortho Design to speak with one of our certified Orthotist to discuss custom orthotics and the impact they can have on Sesamoiditis.
