What is Deformational Plagiocephaly?

Deformational plagiocephaly (DP) is a common condition that affects many babies. Still, it is not considered a serious medical problem and can often be treated with simple interventions such as repositioning or using a cranial remolding helmet. It is a general term for these three types of positional head shape asymmetries in infants:

  • Plagiocephaly occurs when one side of the baby’s head becomes flat, causing an asymmetrical appearance. It can be caused by repeatedly sleeping in the same position or the baby’s positioning in the womb.
  • Brachycephaly refers to a flattened region at the back of the baby’s head, which can make the head look broader than expected. It can also be caused by repeatedly sleeping in the same position or the baby’s positioning in the womb.
  • Scaphocephaly occurs when the baby’s head is long and narrow, with a high, prominent forehead and a pointed back. It is caused by pressure on the baby’s head in the uterus or during childbirth.
