Metatarsalgia is a general term referring to pain and inflammation in the metatarsal area of the foot know as the ball of the foot. The most common causes are activities that involve running and jumping, poor foot mechanics as a result of another condition (claw and hammer toes for example) or ill-fitting shoes that put pressure on the ball of the foot. Proper footwear and custom orthotics have been known to alleviate the discomfort associated with Metatarsalgia
