A bunion or hallux abducto valgus deformity is a progressive foot condition caused by an enlargement of the bone or tissue around the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint (the big toe). It is characterized by lateral deviation of the big toe and a bump on the foot beside the MTP. Extended use of ill-fitting shoes, poor foot biomechanics and or genetic factors are some of the factors thought to contribute to their formation.
Bunion Symptoms include joint pain, pain when walking, joint redness, reoccurring blisters and difficulty finding shoes that fit. In some cases, Orthotic devices can elevate the symptoms caused by this foot condition.
