Bunions

A bunion, also known as hallux abducto valgus deformity, is a foot condition where the bone or tissue around the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint (the big toe) becomes enlarged and causes lateral deviation of the big toe, resulting in a bump on the foot beside the MTP. Poor foot biomechanics, extended use of ill-fitting shoes, and genetic factors are some of the causes of this progressive foot condition.

Common symptoms of bunions include joint pain, difficulty walking, redness around the joint, reoccurring blisters, and difficulty finding well-fitting shoes. Although orthotic devices cannot completely cure bunions, they can help alleviate the symptoms associated with this condition.

Over-the-counter shoe inserts may not be sufficient in addressing foot pain caused by moderate to severe bunions. For those experiencing discomfort, custom orthotics are the best solution. These remedial devices are specially designed to relieve pain and accommodate the specific foot condition of each patient.

While many people associate orthotics with arch support, they can be used for various foot conditions such as plantar fasciitis, calluses, and achilles tendonitis. A custom orthotic can even be designed specifically for bunion-related foot pain.

Custom orthotics can greatly improve the comfort and efficiency of standing, walking, and running by adjusting the angle at which the foot strikes the ground. They also act as shock absorbers, improve balance, and alleviate pressure from areas sensitized by the presence of a bunion.

Custom foot orthotics are just one of the treatments Ortho Design can provide to help with bunion discomfort. A night-time foot brace is another option that we have available.

Using a night-time brace aligns the deformity at the toe, bringing it back to its normal position. This helps prevent stiffness and tightness from developing in the joint and the surrounding soft tissues and helps relieve symptoms.
